C8 Corvette

The C8 is the eighth-generation Chevrolet Corvette and the first production Corvette built with a mid-engine layout. It arrived for 2020 as the Stingray with up to 495 horsepower, and the family has since reached 1,250 combined horsepower in the ZR1X.

What is the C8 Corvette?

The C8 Corvette is the eighth generation of the Chevrolet Corvette, covering the 2020 through 2027 model years and built at Bowling Green Assembly in Kentucky. It was the first production Corvette with a mid-engine layout, revealed as the Stingray on July 18, 2019, and it has grown to seven models.

GM revealed the first production mid-engine Corvette at Tustin, California, on July 18, 2019, then showed the convertible at Kennedy Space Center on October 2, 2019. GM described that car as the first hardtop and mid-engine convertible in Corvette history. MotorTrend named the 2020 Corvette its Car of the Year, the third time for Corvette after 1984 and 1998.

The C8 family grew one step at a time: the Z06 for 2023, the electrified E-Ray for 2024, the twin-turbo ZR1 for 2025, the ZR1X for 2026, and the Grand Sport and Grand Sport X for 2027. GM says the E-Ray is no longer available, and the 2027 Stingray now uses a 6.7-liter LS6 V8.

Corvettes have come from Bowling Green, Kentucky, since 1981. In 2022 GM described the plant as the only one in the world to build the Corvette, and in 2026 it noted that the site also houses the Performance Build Center, where engines are assembled by hand.

Why did Corvette go mid-engine?

Corvette went mid-engine for performance. GM said the layout put more weight over the rear for better straight-line and track performance, moved the driver closer to the front axle, and lowered the hood, instrument panel and steering wheel for a better view of the road.

  1. Weight

A rear weight bias improved performance in a straight line and on the track, according to GM.

  2. Driver position

The driver sat closer to the front axle, almost on top of the front wheels, with the cockpit moved 16.5 inches forward.

  3. View of the road

The hood, instrument panel and steering wheel all sat lower, which opened the view ahead.

The idea was old inside GM. The company framed the 2020 Stingray against 60 years of mid-engine experimentation, naming CERV I, CERV II, CERV III and the Aerovette. Those cars stayed experiments because of engine cooling difficulties, limited passenger and luggage space, loudness and the inability to produce a convertible.

GM credited computer-assisted engineering and virtual reality with making the production layout workable. The result was a car with an engine behind the seats that still offered 12.6 cubic feet of cargo space across two trunks and a convertible version.

What was the Corvette E-Ray?

The Corvette E-Ray was the first electrified, all-wheel-drive Corvette, revealed on January 17, 2023, for the 2024 model year. It paired the 495-horsepower LT2 V8 at the rear axle with a 160-horsepower electric motor at the front wheels for 655 combined horsepower. GM says it is no longer available.

How the E-Ray drive worked

The LT2 sent 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft to the rear axle, while a permanent magnet motor sent 160 horsepower and 125 lb-ft through the front wheels. A 1.9 kWh battery pack sat between the seats. There was no need to plug in: the battery recharged from coasting, braking and normal driving.

A Charge+ feature maximized the battery's state of charge, and the motor extended four-cylinder operation under Active Fuel Management. A lightweight lithium-ion 12-volt battery supported engine stop/start.

Body, brakes and trims

The E-Ray came as a removable-roof coupe and a hardtop convertible in 1LZ, 2LZ and 3LZ trims. Its body was 3.6 inches wider than the Stingray at 79.7 inches, on staggered 20- and 21-inch wheels. Brembo carbon ceramic brakes were standard, and dry weight was 3,774 pounds for the coupe and 3,856 for the convertible.

E-Ray exclusives included a body-length stripe package in Electric Blue and a twisted five-spoke star wheel design. For 2026, body color rocker panels became standard.

How did the C8 transmission work?

The C8 introduced Chevrolet's first eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, designed with TREMEC. An electronic range selector replaced any mechanical link to the driver. Z06, E-Ray, ZR1 and Grand Sport all list eight-speed dual-clutch units, with Grand Sport X adding an auxiliary hydraulic pump for its hybrid modes. The LT6 and LT7 are assembled by hand at the Performance Build Center in Bowling Green.

How did the C8 chassis and aero change the Corvette?

The C8 is built around a center tunnel and six high-pressure diecast aluminum parts GM calls the Bedford Six. Aero grew with each model, from up to 400 pounds of downforce on the 2020 Stingray to 734 pounds on the Z06 with Z07 and over 1,200 pounds on the ZR1 at top speed.

2025 Corvette ZR1 with its rear wing

Aero

The 2020 front splitter and open two-piece spoiler made up to 400 pounds of downforce. The Z06 with Z07 reached 734 pounds at 186 mph, and GM said the ZR1 made the most downforce ever from a Corvette at over 1,200 pounds at top speed. The ZR1 also brought back a split rear window, last seen on the C2.

Structure

The center tunnel is the backbone. Six high-pressure diecast aluminum parts, the Bedford Six, come from GM Powertrain in Bedford, Indiana. GM called the carbon fiber curved rear bumper beam an industry first in 2019, and the trunk tubs and dashboard used an ultra-lightweight float made from fiberglass and a proprietary resin. The steering ratio quickened to 15.7:1.

Brakes

The Stingray launched with eBoost brake actuation and Brembo calipers. The Z06 stepped up to six-piston fronts, with carbon ceramic rotors offered through Z07. For the ZR1X, the J59 package pairs Alcon 10-piston front and 6-piston rear calipers with 16.5-inch rotors, which GM called the largest diameter rotors ever offered on a Corvette in 2025.

Suspension

Short/long arm double wishbones and coil over dampers sit at the corners. Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 was available at launch and became standard on the Z06 and E-Ray. A front lift raises the nose about 40 mm in 2.8 seconds at up to 24 mph and can remember up to 1,000 GPS locations.

Wheels and tires

The 2020 Stingray used 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels. The Z06 moved to 20 by 10 inches in front and 21 by 13 inches in the rear, which GM called the largest wheels ever available on a production Corvette in 2021. Carbon fiber wheels cut unsprung mass by 41 pounds on the Z06 and 42.8 pounds on the ZR1.

How did the C8 Corvette do in racing?

The C8.R won six of 11 IMSA races in 2020 and seven of nine in 2021, with Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor as champions both years. It then took the GTE Am titles in the 2023 FIA World Endurance Championship, and the Z06 GT3.R swept all three IMSA GTD PRO titles in 2025.

Racing and the road car stayed close. GM said the C8.R's aluminum frame was the same as the Stingray's, and a version of the LT6 powered the C8.R from 2019. The Z06 GT3.R shares more than 70 percent of its engine parts with the production Z06 engine, and its aluminum frame comes from Bowling Green.

C7 vs C8: what changed?

The biggest change from C7 to C8 was moving the engine behind the driver. GM also quickened the steering from 16.25:1 to 15.7:1, expanded the driver modes from four to six and offered right-hand drive for the first time. In the Z06, a 670-horsepower LT6 replaced the 650-horsepower supercharged LT4.

What recalls has NHTSA listed for the C8 Corvette?

NHTSA lists ten recall campaigns that include the C8 Corvette, reported from 2020 through 2026. They range from a front trunk release to seat belt retractors and a fuel-filler shield, and most were fixed by a software update or a replaced part. NHTSA data shows no investigations for model years 2020 to 2027.

Recall status belongs to a specific car, so run the VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup before relying on any list. Two of the early campaigns involved the front trunk, shown here on a 2020 Stingray.

What should you know about buying a C8 Corvette, new or used?

Start with the model year, because the engine, the cabin and the lineup all changed during the C8 run. For a used C8, check the VIN for open NHTSA recalls and confirm the options on that exact car. For a new C8, keep in mind that not every model or configuration can be ordered at any given time.

What to confirm on a used C8

  • Open recalls by VIN, since campaigns span 2020 through 2026 model years
  • Which cabin it has: the three-screen layout arrived for 2026
  • Whether the car has the Z51 package, which added performance suspension, larger brake rotors, enhanced cooling and a performance exhaust
  • Magnetic Ride Control, which became available without Z51 for 2021
  • Phone projection, which went wireless for 2021
  • Driver assistance on a Stingray, which became standard for 2024
