Z06: upping the ante
Five years ago, the sixth-generation Corvette Z06 stunned the sports car world. Powered by a 7.0 Liter V8 and sporting an aluminum frame plus the use of select carbon-fiber components, it offers an outstanding power-to-weight ratio.
Now for 2011, Z06 models come standard with new, second-generation Goodyear® Eagle® F1 Supercar tires as well as new exhaust tuning. Magnetic Selective Ride Control (MSRC) is also available for the first time. But the bigger news is the NEW Z07 Performance Package (which includes MSRC) and the NEW CFZ Carbon Fiber Package culminating in the Z06 Carbon Limited Edition.
Z06 is powered by a 7.0 Liter LS7 aluminum block V8 with an 11.0:1 compression ratio. It delivers an SAE-certified 505 hp at 6300 rpm and 470 lb.-ft. of torque at 4800 rpm. The engine employs lightweight titanium intake valves and connecting rods and contains a high-performance dry-sump oil system, which distributes pressurized oil to protect vital components under high-g driving conditions.
Helping Z06 perform even better is the fact that it is the lightest Corvette at 3,175 lbs., thanks to a litany of racing-derived components.

It's the ultimate Z06. The Limited Edition Carbon Z06 (very limited availability). It includes the new Z07 Performance Package plus a carbon-fiber hood and Black carbon-fiber rockers and splitter. It also includes Black 20-spoke wheels and Black outside mirrors and headlamp surrounds. The interior features special suede-insert leather-surfaced seats, along with a suede steering wheel, shift knob, door pull and door armrests with Blue or Orange stitching. Racing pedals and a Euro-style racing number complete the package. It is available in two new colors - Inferno Orange Metallic and Supersonic Blue Metallic - and up to 500 Carbon Z06 editions will be built, enhancing their collectability.
Two new packages stand out in the 2011 Z06 portfolio - one for the exterior and the other to beef up the hardware under the skin.
The Z07 Performance Package includes Brembo® carbon-ceramic brakes, Michelin® Pilot® Sport PS2(TM) tires, 20-spoke Competition Gray wheels on 19-inch front and 20-inch rear rims along with Magnetic Selective Ride Control. Result: better grip, better stopping power and better cornering precision.
The CFZ Carbon Fiber Package includes rocker extensions, front splitter and a full-width rear spoiler. Result: a more nimble, faster vehicle at speed.
With any race car or high-performance street car, lighter is better. An extremely favorable power-to-weight ratio is one of the key performance enablers of the Z06. A major component to this performance is a light yet strong aluminum frame structure that weighs 138 lbs. less than an equivalent steel structure. This aluminum frame is also used on the C6.R race car that competes at Le Mans. In addition, a magnesium engine cradle and fixed roof structure plus carbon-fiber front fenders and carbon-fiber, balsa-sandwiched floorboards help save additional weight.
Race inspired? It's more than that. Corvette Z06 applies a multitude of technologies applied directly from its 10-plus years of experience with the Corvette Racing program at Le Mans and in the American Le Mans Series. These technologies must often undergo even more stringent durability tests in order to go into the road car.
Impressive brakes are necessary to stop a sports car capable of a test-track top speed of 198 mph. Z06 uses monoblock six-piston front calipers and four-piston rears. The extra-large 14-inch front rotors and 13.4-inch rears are vented and cross-drilled.
Launch control is standard with the short-throw six-speed manual gearbox. It modulates engine rpm to lay the power down more smoothly while providing consistent acceleration times on the test track.
The available Head-Up Display projects information in two modes right onto your windshield. Track mode offers speed, rpm and even g-forces. Street mode offers directions from the available navigation system and more.
XM Radio(8) with three trial months is standard. Enjoy commercial-free music, sports, news and talk, comedy, family programming and more from coast-to-coast.
Corvette offers available CD/MP3 Bose seven-speaker sound systems - with and without navigation. Both feature auto tone control, Radio Data System (RDS)(9), automatic volume and TheftLock. Both include a one-year XM Radio(8) trial.
